the coffee

Monkaaba is a smallholder coffee grower empowerment initiative based in San Agustin, Colombia, and led by coffee producer, Esnaider Ortega Gomez and select other growers who have worked for many years to sell their coffee as specialty. They have, in recent years, begun to feel that they would like to develop more autonomy over the coffee production as well as involvement in its marketing and sales. Monkaaba’s goal then is to assist other growers in the area to not only find a better market for their coffee, one that pays a solid price, but also to invest in the knowledge and skill of producers in a way that ensures their future success.

Sidra, a relatively new variety to Specialty Coffee, like the variety, Gesha, has its roots in Ethiopian lineage. It is genetically different from Gesha, and carries a different flavour profile. It is incredibly juicy and delicate, but this expression of it has a spicy, almost clove and cardamom note, which makes it super distinct.

This nano-lot of coffee is a blend of Sidra pickings from many of the Monkaaba group members, who didn't harvest enough to sell on their own. We're excited to be featuring this exceptional and special coffee!

Brewing
This coffee shines with any brew method and is expressive in different ways. As a filter coffee, it is delicate, tea-like, with wild flavours. As french press, it is sweet, full-bodied, and balanced. As espresso, it is syrupy, bright, and thick.

Brew Guides

how to brew

This coffee works well as a Filter roast. Here are the methods it’s best suited to, with a few tips to help you get there.

Pour Over

Pour over is one of the most rewarding ways to brew. It's hands-on enough to feel intentional and forgiving enough to learn quickly. Great for showcasing the nuances of single origin coffees.

Aeropress

The Aeropress is forgiving, portable, and surprisingly capable of producing an excellent cup. It brews quickly under gentle pressure, which gives the coffee a smooth, full-bodied character. A good option if you want something a bit more robust without pulling out an espresso machine.

Drip

A well-dialled drip brewer is hard to beat for reliability. Good for larger volumes and for households where the machine earns its counter space every morning. The key is using a good grind size and fresh beans — the machine does the rest.

Espresso Machine

Espresso brewing has a steeper learning curve than most methods, but the results — a concentrated, complex shot with a layer of crema — are worth the effort. Works best with our espresso roast coffees, though a few of our filter roasts pull well too.

French Press

French press is one of the most accessible ways to make a great cup. The immersion method draws out more body and oils than paper-filter brewing, which gives it a rich, round character. Good for people who prefer their coffee with a bit more weight to it.

Instant

Not all instant coffee is created equal. Ours is made from specialty-grade coffee and brewed properly before it's dried — so it tastes like coffee, not like an approximation of it. Ready in seconds, no equipment required.
